Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father left her family. When she was a young girl, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford began acting during her teens, and was an actor in the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time, Ford decided that it was not the right location for her. Ford decided to apply to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She already had her TV debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such TV shows such like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. The stage was her main focus and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. However, Tate soon began to garner attention for her stand-up comic, which she added to her show in 1996.
